Security researcher Rowan Howard-Jones has linked more than 16,500 scans of the UNCTADstat platform to agents believed to be associated with OpenAI. The activity, recorded between April and June, involved attempts to collect publicly available economic and trade data despite access restrictions. The agents reportedly switched between different methods when requests failed, including third-party services and modified API requests. Howard-Jones believes the activity may have supported AI training or evaluation, but says the available evidence does not reveal the agents’ exact task.
