Rockstar apparently isn’t interested in making a political statement in GTA 6, a game about love, passion, and the shrinking of the American dream. In the company’s defense, its reasoning is sound. Rockstar has never been scared to push the boat, with GTA 5 famously touching on the effectiveness of torture and government blacksites, and GTA 6 will likely be no different.

The line is drawn at political satire via real-world moments. If GTA 6 had created an NPC called Melon Husk who shoots rockets into space and is a bit weird, by the time it came out it wouldn’t have factored in all the horrible stuff that character’s real-life counterpart has done since. These games take a long time to make, and no one wants to be as dated as a Borderlands gag.

“If you go back to previous GTAs, there’s never really been much focus on national politics,” Rupert Humphries, senior vice president of narrative of Rockstar, told Love Magazine. “The rise of Homeland Security and the Patriot Act were pretty central to GTA 4, but that was mainly because post-9/11 New York was a real frontline for those issues.

“Because we are trying to make games that feel very specific to the moment they are released, but at the same time, not reflective of the exact world we live in, we don’t want to be too specific about any particular person, event, movement or anything like that.”

Instead, the focus is on capturing the essence of Florida — all the wild Florida men and women, cops and gangbangers the developer met on its GTA 6 research trips. “We have really tried to build out our world — filling it with all the characters and culture wars necessary to make it feel alive,” Humphries said.

“And then we have so many ways to tell these stories outside of actually meeting characters face to face. You can see a sign for an election, receive a robocall from a campaign, or hear a commercial on the radio. And then we have some great political talk shows on the radio too where they discuss all these issues.”

The focus is telling it all through the lens of satire, making it larger than life. Rockstar isn’t shying away from themes and contemporary topics, but rather than holding up a mirror and saying “remember this?” it’s attempting to explore those topics through its own original characters and scenarios.

GTA 6 features dual protagonists, Jason and Lucia, who embark upon a crime spree across a fictionalized rendition of Florida, called Leonida in-game. Local NBA team the Miami Heat will wear GTA 6-themed uniforms in its upcoming match to celebrate the game’s upcoming launch.

GTA 6 comes to PS5 and Xbox Series consoles on November 19, 2026. GTA 6 is expected to make up to $5.2 billion in sales by the end of launch week. The previous game continues to break records — GTA 5 has sold over 200 million copies across consoles and PC.
