Tesla’s camera-based approach to autonomous driving is facing renewed attention after Elon Musk linked night-time animal detection to the Robotaxi’s operating hours in Austin. The company has continued to reject lidar in favour of cameras and AI, while rivals such as Waymo use a mix of sensors. An Electrek report examined how lidar and radar could offer additional information in poor visibility. Tesla’s approach is also under regulatory review following an investigation into Full Self-Driving crashes in low-visibility conditions.
