Hard to believe it’s been 30 years since Wes Craven’s horror classic Scream hit theaters. To celebrate, Paramount is releasing Scream 30th Anniversary Collector’s Set, an Amazon-exclusive bundle that includes the movie along with a number of physical items. Preorders are live now (see it at Amazon). It costs $119.99 and is set to release on December 15.

Scream: 30th Anniversary Collector’s Set

This collector’s set comes with the movie on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and digital. It also includes case file items of the kind a detective would compile. But the pièce de résistance is a replica of the cordless phone made famous during the opening scene in which Ghostface calls Drew Barrymore’s character to terrify her before moving in for the kill. The phone has blood stains on it, and plays “iconic quotes.”

By 1996, the slasher movie had become a somewhat played-out genre. We’d gotten nine Friday the 13th movies, seven Nightmares on Elm Street, and six Halloweens. Horror fans basically knew what to expect from them, even including the order in which the characters would die.

Pretty much instantly upon release, Scream breathed (stabbed?) new life into the genre by adding a meta layer in which the characters in the movie knew the horror movie tropes. It also featured a likable cast of characters played by Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Skeet Ulrich, and Drew Barrymore. Combine that with the ongoing mystery of who Ghostface is as the bodies pile up, and you have a thrilling new entry in the genre.

Scream would go on to spawn numerous sequels of its own, some of which are better than others (Scream 2 still rules, btw). But the original movie boldly carved itself into the horror canon, becoming a staple of the genre and one of the best horror movies of the ‘90s.
