Konami is planning “second and third waves” of new Silent Hill games, according to producer Motoi Okamoto.
Okamoto offered a foggy glimpse into the classic horror franchise’s future during an interview featured in Famitsu Issue 1965 (via Game Observer). The series ended a long, painful drought without new games with an initial wave of new releases over the last few years, and now that this first batch is out, Konami is already looking forward to what it can do next.
“All three titles we initially announced were able to be released successfully, so we’re relieved (laughs),” he noted. “They’ve also received high praise, and we are satisfied with it.”
Okamoto continued: “Successfully launching this ‘first wave’ comes with great relief, but we’re not stopping here; we must think of the second and third waves. We can’t share specific details, but we’re currently looking at a number of projects.”
The first wave of Konami’s return to Silent Hill – which included titles like the Silent Hill 2 remake, Silent Hill f, and last month’s Silent Hill: Townfall – rolled out throughout the last few years. Townfall arrived as the most recent installment when it dropped players into the shoes of protagonist Simon Ordell in a ’90s Scotland just last month.
It received generally favorable reviews, with IGN giving it an 8/10. We said, “Like the intravenous needle permanently jutting out of its hero’s wrist, Silent Hill: Townfall gives this long running series a welcome shot in the arm.”
It’s a successful run of games that Konami is happy with, but getting here wasn’t easy. After Hideo Kojima’s Silent Hills failed to materialize, Okamoto said he had a hard time convincing higher-ups that more games was the way to go. However, as far as he was concerned, “just one remake is not enough,” adding, “as a producer, I cannot let it end only with that.”
“If there were only one release, wouldn’t people think that the development is going to be cancelled again, I thought,” Okamoto added.
While Konami’s plan to launch additional waves of Silent Hill games spells a promising future for fans who have missed the franchise, we have known that the series would continue in some form. Bloober Team, the horror-centric developer responsible for the Silent Hill 2 remake, confirmed it was working on a remake of the original Silent Hill last year.
