A Street Fighter Movie Sequel Is Already Being Written, but There’s a Catch

Director Kitao Sakurai confirmed that he’s already hard at work writing up a sequel to his upcoming Street Fighter film, but whether or not it gets made all depends on how the first movie performs.

Sakurai spoke about the possibility of a sequel in an interview with MovieWeb, saying the groundwork is already being laid to continue Ryu and Ken’s adventures after the events of the second World Warrior Tournament. But if fans want to see their fights continue after this, they’ll have to put their butts in some seats at their local theaters to make it happen.

“It’s something that we’re thinking about and developing,” he told the outlet. “I don’t want to say anything that locks us in. It also kind of depends on how people react to this one, and whether they, you know, support this vision of the story. We definitely have a lot of ideas, and we’re writing currently, but you know, I wouldn’t want to make any promises one way or the other about what exactly we’re gonna do.”

Having spoken with the cast myself, I can confirm that their hopes for a sequel are high, but they’ve also confirmed that interest from moviegoers is essential in order to justify making another Street Fighter film.

Just today, it was confirmed that the Street Fighter movie will contain several animated sequences diving into Ryu and Ken’s backstory with their mentor, Gouken, and his brother, Akuma. Fans are already providing positive feedback to what they’ve seen so far, praising the art style and fluid animation — but there’s one character who’s been left out of the marketing thus far, and he’s already getting the community’s gears turning as to who a sequel might be about.

We haven’t yet seen Sagat in any of the film’s trailers or advertisements, and no casting announcements have been made for him. Obviously, fans are hopeful that, if a sequel does end up getting made, Sagat will be a significant part of it — but given the wealth of characters in Street Fighter games, there’s no telling who might show up in a second movie.

This is the second big film from Capcom to hit theaters following Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil adaptation, which was broadly well-received by regular moviegoers and critics, alike, though hopes for a sequel are also low at the moment, given that Cregger has publicly claimed he will “never” touch a franchise film again.

Street Fighter releases in theaters on October 16, 2026. We got the chance to speak to the cast ahead of its release, including David Dastmalchian, who told us all about how he studied real-life cult leaders to bring M. Bison to the big screen.
