NFL fans expressed some pretty heated responses on social media to the first clip of Nicolas Cage in the upcoming movie Madden, where the Oscar winner portrays the legendary football TV commentator John Madden.
Director David O. Russell’s film chronicles Madden’s relationship with Al Davis (played by Christian Bale) and Madden’s journey, as the official synopsis puts it, “from a Super Bowl-winning partnership with the Raiders, to becoming football’s most recognizable voice, to building the worldwide Madden NFL video game.”
In the clip (seen below), Cage’s Madden sits opposite Joel Murray’s Pat Summerall as Madden breaks down a play on the telestrator while the crew in the booth react to it.

Judging by the visceral responses from a slew of football fans on social media, they appear to be mostly upset that Cage doesn’t sound like the iconic sports host. (I guess these fans must have missed the film’s trailer, since this isn’t the first time Cage’s Madden performance has been revealed.)
Here’s a sample of the kinds of responses that have been posted:
- “This is a disgraceful portrayal of a great man.” – AFL Godfather
- “What a nightmare. Madden was a Legendary coach – capital Legendary – and this is what they come up with?” – tonmile trader
- “Sigh….this could have been so good. I can’t not hear Cage’s voice. Or not see Cage’s face. This is an insulting caricature of John Madden. I don’t know how this got made.” – Matthew Ross
- “Nicolas Cage told the director of the new Madden movie that John Madden’s voice ‘may not be anatomically possible/ for him to do. They went ahead and made the whole movie anyway.” – Aakash Gupta
- “I was wondering how Nicolas Cage was going to pull off being Madden. Turns out he didn’t pull it off at all.” – Brian O’Leary
- “I mean this is basically a desecration of Madden’s legacy. Astoundingly bad.” – Mark Valorian
- “He sounds like 10% Jimmy Stewart, 90% Nicolas Cage. 0% Madden.” – Edward Fear
- “Everyone is rightfully dogpiling on Nicolas Cage as Madden here, but the Pat Summerall is even more disrespectful. Looks and sounds nothing like Pat, acts annoyed by Madden, seems to have no football knowledge of his own. This movie needs to be shelved.” – Tim Roberts
- “There are going to have to be arrests. Accountability for this is a must.” – Rob Slater
Criticisms weren’t reserved just for the performances. Cinema Tweets blasted the man behind the camera in their post, saying, “David O. Russell might never direct a film again after Madden. Do I want that to happen? Of course not. I want Madden to be a huge success. But if this film turns out as bad as it looks (and based on this trailer…it looks bad), who would ever bankroll O. Russell again? He just made the worst film of his career with Amsterdam & if he follows it up with another flop, why would anyone take another chance on him? Especially when you consider how difficult he is to work with as a director. There’s a lot on the line for O. Russell right now.”
In addition to Cage and Bale, Madden also stars Kathryn Hahn, Sienna Miller, John Mulaney, and Shane Gillis. Madden opens in select theaters on November 18, 2026 via Amazon MGM Studios.
