Daniel Craig’s first James Bond film, Casino Royale, is returning to theaters very soon for the film’s 20th anniversary.
Amazon MGM Studios confirmed the news today with a poster confirming that the iconic 007 film will return to theaters worldwide this October. A firm release date wasn’t provided and it’s hard to predict, since the film originally released on November 17, 2006 in the United States, so this anniversary screening is happening a bit earlier than one might expect. However, given how stacked November is with film releases, October is likely a better choice anyways.
Casino Royale was a watershed moment for the Bond franchise, as the Pierce Brosnan era largely crashed and burned by the end of its run. The series was seeking something that could modernize and refresh itself for audiences, leading to a more grounded, gritty, and raw take on the MI6 spy. Despite doubts that he could pull it off, Craig turned in a captivating performance that was both charming and intimidating. Perhaps even more notably, he gave Bond a bit more depth than ever before, and the filmmakers took advantage of his vibrant blue eyes for some really emotional moments toward the end of the film.

Casino Royale kicked off a legendary five-film run for Craig, and although not all of them were slam dunks, they cleaned up at the box office and revitalized a character that some fans had begun to count out. Craig’s time as 007 came to an end in 2021 with No Time to Die, and now, all eyes are on the future of the character. Amazon is actively developing the next Bond film with director Denis Villeneuve, with an expectation that it will shoot shortly after he finishes Dune Part 3.
Casting for the next James Bond has been underway since the spring, and rumors suggest the producers have already found their man. The first draft of the script is also complete, according to writer Steven Knight, suggesting the film is making strong progress. The next Bond is expected to be announced by the end of the year, and some fans think this re-release may help lead into that. We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but it’s an exciting time to be a Bond fan.
