YouTube's New A/B Video Test Feature Is Already Creating Fears Over Weaponized Negativity

YouTube is launching a new feature that allows creators to test different cuts of their own videos, leading fans to worry that it could be used for weaponized negativity.

Earlier today, YouTube unveiled a bunch of new features coming for creators in 2027. One of the most notable new features is an A/B test that allows creators to try out different cuts of their videos, allowing them to experiment with different hooks, pacing, and more. In YouTube’s own example, the runtime differs by several minutes across three different cuts being tested, so the difference can be pretty radical.

Some have feared that this may encourage creators to test videos that skew positively or negatively before deciding which one gets the most traffic and using that as the permanent choice. One example provided by someone on X is someone making a YouTube video where they review the upcoming remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time with a positive and a negative review.

This has also led some to wonder how this might be reflected to viewers. Will some audiences watch completely different videos and be left wondering what others are referring to in the comments or on social media? All in all, the feature poses some flaws, but hopefully YouTube can prevent it from being abused.
