California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed AB 2409, barring covered state and local public officials from issuing memecoins. The law also restricts digital asset service providers from listing certain memecoins associated with public officials from January 1, 2027. The legislation forms part of a wider package addressing public ethics, crypto-related crimes and consumer protection.
