The Northeast monsoon is at Chennai’s doorstep. This year, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted normal Northeast monsoon rainfall, with a strong El Niño likely to strengthen it further towards the end of the year. Historically, November and December have, for long, been months to remember in the city, where rains can be unpredictable. With the monsoon getting shorter and more intense over the past few years, successive Dravidian governments had grappled with mitigation measures, only to be overwhelmed time and again by the ferocity of nature.
