Call Of Duty’s Carry Forward Will Continue In Warzone For MW4, But There’s A Catch

Call of Duty is making major changes to how content carries forward in Warzone, starting with Modern Warfare 4’s integration into battle royale. Players will still have access to years’ worth of weapons from previous titles, but there will be limitations on how they’re used in Warzone.

Operator skins and weapons from Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7 will remain available in Warzone for Season 1, including access to the blueprints and camos players have earned or purchased for them. However, there will be a change to how players get to utilize the older guns in battle royale.

The older guns from the last three Call of Duty games have become “legacy” weapons in Warzone. They’re still available to use right now, and they can be fully customized in the Gunsmith just like the current batch of weapons for Black Ops 7. This will change with Modern Warfare 4’s integration to Warzone, as the update will remove the option to customize legacy weapons in Warzone.

“While these weapons remain available to use, Gunsmith functionality and prior custom loadouts will not be supported for legacy weapons or legacy blueprints,” Activision says.

However, the publisher confirms these older guns won’t be left as base weapons without any attachments. Each legacy base weapon will have a five-attachment version available for players to select, as well as any owned blueprints with its existing attachment setups.

“Our goal for this chapter of Call of Duty: Warzone is for the weapon meta to feel distinctly rooted in Modern Warfare 4, while preserving access to nostalgic choices that players know and love,” Activision says.

While this meant to be a compromise to players, there is still the possibility of negative blowback over this decision, as many players commit to a lengthy grind just to unlock the attachments they want. Pre-built weapons also won’t cater to all playstyles, and this could drastically reduce the appeal of using the classic guns in Warzone. Legacy guns are rarely meta in Warzone anyway, so blocking them from the Gunsmith feels like an odd choice, as some players just have a favorite gun they like to use despite the current meta.

For operator skins, Modern Warfare 4’s integration into Warzone will keep all the older legacy skins, but seeing these operators will be optional. Players can use a toggle feature to control which skins they see in Call of Duty, allowing them to preserve the immersion of Modern Warfare 4 or keep seeing all the wacky skins of the last few years.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 releases on October 23 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. The game will include a full campaign, multiplayer, and DMZ extraction mode. The Modern Warfare 4 campaign will have early access, allowing players to jump in as early as October 16.
