For The First Time Ever, Sony Skips CES, Which Was Home To One Of PlayStation’s Silliest Announcements

Sony has attended every edition of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) since it debuted in 1967, but that’s ending for the upcoming show in January 2027. This means there won’t be any PlayStation news, at least not directly from Sony.

The company confirmed to Bloomberg that it’s pulling out of the show this year following a strategic evaluation of its approach to “events and communications based on the needs and priorities of our diverse business.”

The company went on to say that today it’s putting more focus on “entertainment,” including games, anime, films, and music. CES, on the other hand, is primarily a technology show.

What PlayStation announcements have there been at CES before?

Sony’s showing at CES historically includes a keynote address, featuring executives and creative leaders from the company discussing upcoming technologies and products. Sony never made the most momentous PlayStation announcements at its CES events over the years, but it was an event that fans could expect some news, at least.

For example, in 2020, then-PlayStation boss Jim Ryan revealed the PS5 logo at CES. At the time, people were clamoring for any morsel of news about the console, and fans roasted Sony for revealing only the logo. At CES 2022, Sony unveiled PlayStation VR2 and a new game for it, Horizon: Call of the Mountain. In more recent years, Sony’s PlayStation-related announcements at CES pertained to the company’s transmedia adaptations, including the announcement of Horizon and Helldivers movies.

Microsoft, for its part, revealed the original Xbox with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson at CES 2001, but the company didn’t carry the tradition forward with similarly big Xbox announcements at CES over the years. Nintendo, meanwhile, famously revealed the first version of the NES at CES in 1984–it was unveiled as a prototype known as the Advanced Video System.

CES 2027 takes place January 6-9 in Las Vegas.
