Flying is cool, and the Ace Combat series manages to make it even better with a symphony of gunfire coming from fighter jets and the smell of exhaust. Well, you can’t smell it in the cockpit, but I imagine it’s a smell that makes you feel cool. It has been seven years since the last entry, but Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is letting you jump back into the pilot’s seat with a fresh campaign and a huge multiplayer mode, and right now, Fanatical is making the ticket price even cheaper right ahead of launch.

Typically, I’m not a huge fan of simulation games that involve flying around the open skies. Microsoft Flight Simulator? I’d rather play anything else, despite the fact that I understand the appeal. However, being the leader of a squadron of fighter jets is fittingly awesome, and dogfighting might be some of the most fun I’ve had in any game, ever. Star Wars Squadrons made me fall in love with the idea, and years later, Ace Combat 8 is capturing my interest.

In the campaign portion, you play as a silent protagonist who serves as the weapons systems officer for FCU naval aviator Jan Cope. After Cope is killed in action, you need to take up the mantle of the Wings of Theve, leading the Joker Flight squadron into the Sotoa-Usea War. Your combat performance, as well as some other key decisions, will determine whether your squadron thrives under pressure or is defeated by the enemy, forcing you to make tough choices in the heat of the moment.

There are a total of 30 aircraft to choose from, each offering its own strengths and weaknesses. And to make things even more interesting, unlike previous games, you can now damage enemy aircraft by shooting at any part of the vehicle, meaning you don’t need to lock onto specific weak points. Although that might still be beneficial.

After practicing in the cockpit with the campaign mode, it’s time to suit up and jump into your aircraft for Ace Combat 8’s multiplayer option. Huge lobbies allow you to walk around the airbase with your own custom avatar before choosing between a PvE mode that sees you take on hostile forces, or a warfare mode that requires you to work with your team against other players and non-playable enemies, with a variety of land, sea, and air targets to take down.

Ahead of launch, you can preorder Ace Combat 8 for just $60.19 / £52.45 at Fanatical, netting you a Steam key and letting you play at a 14% discount compared to the usual price.
