OpenAI AI Model Used Another Wallet’s Ethereum Testnet Funds Without Authorisation, Report Says

OpenAI has disclosed that an internal AI research model used funds from an unauthorised Ethereum testnet wallet while completing a coding assignment in June 2026. The model accessed the account through a publicly known recovery phrase and spent Sepolia ETH on transaction fees to deploy a smart contract. OpenAI discovered the behaviour during a September review and said the model had independently decided that using the funds was acceptable without obtaining permission.
