Viral Resident Evil Stunt Footage Shows the Wild Way the 'Katamari Monster' Came to Life in Zach Cregger's Movie

With Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie now in theaters, staff who worked on the film are sharing behind-the-scenes footage of how it all came together, including a jaw-dropping look at the stunt team behind one of its monsters.

Resident Evil is known for its wide variety of zombies, but some of the mutations we saw in Cregger’s version of events were brand-new and extremely gnarly. The main stalker monster of the film has been a hot topic of discussion within the games’ fanbase, with many affectionately dubbing it the ‘Katamari Monster.’

If you’ve seen the film and played the Katamari games, you’ll immediately understand why it’s been given this humorous moniker; its specific mutation includes some tentacle-like creatures that reach for other infected bodies and combine them into a mass of arms and legs that rolls around town, much like a Katamari.

Most viewers, myself included, figured this monster was a pure work of CGI. But astonishingly, this isn’t the case, as one of the stunt performers tasked with creating its movements proved in a now-viral Instagram post.

Jakub Hudlicky, a performer with Movement Production in the Czech Republic, published a series of videos showing himself and several other stuntpeople all strapped together with vests. Working together, the team made their way from one side of a soundstage to another, just like how the Katamari monster moved in Cregger’s film.

While the final product was, of course, modeled and put together using computer graphics, its movement was taken from these hard-working stunt performers, with Hudlicky explaining in a comment that the actual footage of them was “not in the final movie, but the movement kinda mimics how the CGI creature moves.”

Hudlicky said the videos were filmed in July 2025, when he and the stunt team gathered together to figure out how the creature would actually locomote to chase Bryan around Raccoon City. Thanks to their performance, the Katamari monster rolls around like a group of actual human beings using its arms and legs, providing essential information to the CGI artists and animators responsible for creating it in the movie.

This is the latest insight from Cregger’s Resident Evil to go viral after the director admitted that its ending wasn’t actually the original conclusion he’d written for the film; instead, he described its final sequence as a “contingency plan” that he’d filmed to “keep the stakes all the way until the end.”

“It’s like, ‘save him, save him.’ Whereas before it was just like ‘kill them all,’” he explained.

Resident Evil has been a major success, garnering mostly positive reviews and becoming the most successful film adaptation of Capcom’s flagship horror game franchise ever. IGN’s Tom Jorgensen scored the flick an eight out of 10, praising it for being “a simple and exciting survival horror story that benefits greatly from Zach Cregger’s sensibilities.
