In a resolution approved by a majority of the board, Tata Sons has reappointed N Chandrasekaran as the company’s Executive Chairman on a new five-year term. The decision follows Chandrasekaran’s announcement in August 2026 in which he stated that he wouldn’t seek another term at the company once his current tenure ends on February 20, 2027.
N Chandrasekaran to continue heading Tata Sons
The resolution was passed by a majority at a Tata Sons board meeting held in Mumbai on September 17, 2026. The company stated that its Nomination and Remuneration Committee (NRC) had met on September 3, 2026 to discuss Chandrasekaran’s decision to leave. The committee then asked Chandrasekaran to reconsider his earlier decision by citing his contributions and the larger interests of the group, to which he agreed at the board meeting held on September 17.
Following this, the board proceeded to reappoint him. A fresh term means that Chandrasekaran would continue heading the company until February 2032. Chandrasekaran has chaired Tata Sons since February 2017 and is currently serving his second five-year term, which will end on February 20, 2027. According to a Reuters report, the board’s latest decision also comes as Tata Sons faces pressure over its regulatory status.
The company had recently requested the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to deregister it as a core investment company, a move which was rejected by the state-run institution. Tata Sons stated that the board would initiate steps to comply with all applicable RBI guidelines. The group also said that it will seek guidance from the RBI, Tata Trusts and other stakeholders on this matter going forward.
Possible reasons behind N Chandrasekaran’s reappointment
Chandrasekaran’s continuation is expected to provide leadership stability for the company that’s currently going through several significant investments. It was under Chandrasekaran’s leadership that Tata Motors branched out into separate commercial and passenger vehicle divisions, while the latter continued to expand its EV business.
The group’s automotive supply chain expansion has also continued through Chandrasekaran’s tenure. This includes the construction of the Agratas battery plant in Sanand, Gujarat, and semiconductor facilities for Tata Electronics in Gujarat and Assam. During his leadership, Tata has also continued investing in new electric platforms for Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), which has been a major contributor to the overall revenue and profit for Tata Motors.
